Brisbane startup says it can make mRNA vaccines for Australia | MsEmmaK

A Brisbane startup says it can make the active ingredients for the new generation of mRNA vaccines in Australia, but more government funding and training support are critical to produce these products at scale.

“As a microbial fermentation company, Luina Bio has all the capacity to produce the API - the active pharmaceutical - for mRNA vaccines,” Luina’s general manager of business development Max Rossetto said at an event for biotech organisation BioMelbourne Network on Tuesday. Luina Bio’s Max Rossetto with Centre for Biopharmaceutical Excellence Director Rachel Jensen, PwC Director Gyanam Sadananda, the CSO of Cell Therapies, Associate Professor Dominic Wall, and Dr Leigh Farrell, the head of health security at DMTC Limited.

“Producing mRNA vaccines at scale is a brand new challenge the entire world is grappling with and will take time to develop,” she said.as the nation’s flagship biotech firm CSL says it has its hands full making AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine and has no solid plans to pivot to mRNA production.

Setting up and running this type of manufacturing was likely to be less expensive than other biologics projects, particularly if the firm already had good manufacturing practice [GMP] certification to make other products, she said.“I think the key is that the actual nuts and bolts [of mRNA] is actually not that complicated,” Professor Fox said. “I don’t think it would be too difficult for a company to get into this space.

MsEmmaK Fantastic! You'd think Minister Karen Andrews would be ecstatic, since vaccine imports have slumped. But wtte 'No, maybe in the future, we're sticking with current CSL rollout' is all she said. Why? Maybe she doesn't care b/c she & her family have already had their Pfizer vax?

MsEmmaK Late is better than never. Get on it.

MsEmmaK Minister Karen Andrews said No, but maybe in the future. Sticking with current CSL rollout.

MsEmmaK This is where our tax money should be going. I vote yes

MsEmmaK So can CSL. Not at sure why they aren't.

You have got to be fucking kidding me Those flights could be mustered in a day The only reason is that f'ing Scott Morrison and f'ing Josh Frydenberg are stingy xenophobes that represent other stingy xenophobes they don't want to piss off Gallo_Ways katinacurtis Let me guess. By Christmas. Gallo_Ways katinacurtis Stop it. Just stop it. How many broken promises have to happen before you stop reporting Morrison's bullshit as anything other than what it is? Pfizer, CSL coy on mRNA push in AustraliaUS drug giant Pfizer has declared it is focused on existing vaccine manufacturing sites in North America and Europe, dampening hopes that Australia could set up manufacturing of its COVID-19 shot in the short-term. Is it how 5 eyes are trusting, working together and helping each other? It looks Australia economic interests have suffered by cutting relationships with China and U.S. has profited by exporting more to China. Glaven1994 Yep it was never going to be something that could be done quickly but hope that they still pursue setting up development of mRNA manufacturing here. It looks like the future for so many medications.
