Fire pits OK for winter in Brisbane, but only on a trial basis

The Brisbane City Council has decided to temporarily lift restrictions on backyard fire pits this winter to allow residents to enjoy the outdoor heaters without being fined. The local law will be suspended on a trial basis for winterresidents in Brisbane were shocked to discoverLord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the local law will be suspended from next month — during winter — on a trial basis.

"If they're creating a lot of smoke and causing a nuisance for neighbours, that's obviously something of concern," he said."But if it's a standard fire pit not generating a nuisance for the area then I think it should be allowed." This follows Brisbane mother Kirsty George receiving a visit from a council officer last month, when her family were cooking marshmallows in a fire pit in their backyard in Oxley. Each local council area has differing laws but state fire authorities are a good place to start:

Embarrassingly this decision came off the back of a petition, void of expert consultation. Be careful and stay safe regardless.

Dumb. Now, if Adrian Schrinner bne_lordmayor could only invent something to stop the smoke from a backyard fire wafting over the rest of the neighbourhood.

Geez.....never knew having firepits were against the law. Good thing the stupid restriction is discarded. Seriously, it's the 21st century yet, the government and other bureaucrat authorities are so intrusive and interfere with people's lives excessively.

JessHinchy This is a completely nonsensical decision. The evidence is clear: wood smoke is highly polluting and endangers health. Ask one of your international airquality experts, Lidia Morawska at QUT, what she thinks of this brain fade. /1 QldEnvironment brisbanecityqld woodsmoke
