Ali Ayad said he was surprised it took so long to get caught after admitting claiming payments while running a lucrative business.

A Perth man who defrauded Centrelink of more than $110,000 while running a multi-million-dollar shopping trolley collection business has been sentenced to three years' jail.Over seven years he failed to claim income from a business with a $3.6m turnoverAli Ayad, 49, received Newstart payments and carer allowance between May 2010 and December 2017 while he was operating the business, which had a turnover of almost $3.6 million.

The District Court was told most of the defrauded money was used to fund Ayad's gambling and drinking problems, but he also made four trips to the Philippines where he bought property. He was required to tell the Department of Human Services about any income he received, but he failed to do so. At one point Ayad completed a form on which he had answered"no" to the question:"Do you undertake any paid voluntary work, study or training?"The court heard when he was interviewed by authorities he said he knew he should have told the department what he was earning and he was surprised it took so long to get caught.

Mr MacLean said when Ayad arrived in Australia he received Centrelink payments and accommodation, for which he was"grateful", but he then also started doing work for cash.

The idiot should have just easily abused the tax system to his advantage like the Liberal party structures it to be

So this 'refugee' fraudster gets out in 18 months to start his thieving again. How many of his wives & relatives are taxpayers supporting btw? Surely all these scamming 'refugee advocates' could do a bit of jail time to show solidarity with their mate.

Just what you would expected from a late braking lib backed network. Have a day off please.

Oh that's standard operations for Aounists & Hezbollah have you ONLY just noticed Australia?! Better keep kicking all the disabled people off their pension to save cash so you can feed your REAL masters...

This from the same department that stopped a persons rent assistance payments because his caravan burnt down in the bushfires. Fuck me....

That’s Criminal BUT NO More criminal than the Multi National Companies PAYING NO TAX. OR Religions Getting Gvt Grants and Running Real Estate Co’s. TAX RELIGIONS LIKE THE BUSINESSES THEY ARE

cultural misunderstanding no doubt.

People defrauding us, the tax payers, need to be treated really harshly. Long jail terms and confiscate the assets of the rich ones to recoup the loss and their accomodation in jail. There are people who really need help but these guys are thieves of the worst kind!

rAiSe NeWsTaRT nOw!!✊👊

Seems to be a common theme with most of these thieves getting caught for welfare fraud...

Hmm, what is it about his name ?

Is this man a naturalised Australian citizen? If not, he should be deported immediately upon the termination of his prison sentence. He has shown utter contempt for the country that gave him a new home and a new start.

Its a cultural thing

These are the poor refugee scumbags ABC are pushing to come to Australia.

Another 'Bring Them Here' success story.

Another battling aussie getting screwed by the system.

Oh great. Now watch while the government uses this as further justification for treating poor people on Centrelink like garbage.

Sometimes the persecuted aren't blameless for their situation. Of course the trauma of it all can cause people to do things beyond their control but I'm sure his defence team & experts are working on that now abcnews auspol

What's $110k equate to? About 28 years on Newstart?

Nice to see new arrivals respecting our generous system.

Fraudsters make it hard for the honest people who do genuinely need support to get it. In some people’s eyes all welfare recipients are undeserving and it’s these sort of cases that perpetuate that opinion.

3.5 million supermarket trolley collection business now I know why everything is so expensive.

Who would have thought that collecting trollies was a lucrative business.

robodebt on that is going to be a biatch. oh wait, friends don't robodebt friends.

Breathtaking greed sees Angus Taylor in receipt of $80 million for water that doesn't exist.

but lets drug test the over 50 year old on newstart shall we....
