A police officer who built up a rapport with James Gargasoulas says the killer briefly offered to hand himself in hours before his fatal rampage. But by the end of their conversation, Gargasoulas had shut down communication and refused to reply to the officer's texts.

"He was going to hand himself in for the majority of the conversation," the detective said."He was basically going to present himself to police. It was only at the very end that he shut down communication.

""Ive [sic] calculated my options and yeah its [sic] not looking good i either die in jail or die trying to run from the boys," one text from Gargasoulas said in response."Don't do this. Meet me. stop doing this. Stop."On Monday, the inquest heard panicked radio calls in which an officer pleaded for someone to"take him out" as Gargasoulas drove a stolen car in circles in the busy intersection outside Flinders Street Station."Urgent.
