Silk sheets may evoke images of romance novels and princesses, but in recent times we’ve been sold the benefits of laying our heads on the fabric.

But sleep psychologist Dr Moira Junge, of the Sleep Health Foundation, says there is no hard evidence to suggest any particular pillowcase material will lead to better sleep, adding that your inner pillow’s support is much more important. “Some people might swear by it … if it really made them feel calm, and have improved sleep, then that’s fantastic.”There are companies selling “silk pillowcases” that aren’t actually silk, for example made of polyester instead. Contact the business if you’re not sure.

Because silk can stain easily, consider purchasing a darker colour, and be careful with the skincare products you slap on right before bed.It’s a myth that silk must be dry-cleaned. Put it in the washing machine and use a delicate or wool detergent.Rajkhowa says it’s well established that silk is less irritating on our skin than some other fabrics, in part because the fibre is actually a natural protein.

“If it’s a smoother surface and creating less drag, our skin is less likely to get an imprint of that pillowcase,” says specialist dermatologist Dr Adam Sheridan, adding that it’s possible silk could help promote fewer wrinkles long-term around the mouth and eyes.
