Belgium's Princess Astrid commemorates the Australians who died in World War I while leading her country's first economic mission to Australia in more than a decade, as Australia and the European Union negotiate a free trade agreement.

The princess cast a commemorative gold star at the Anzac Memorial in Sydney to remember Jerome Devos, a relative of Australia's Ambassador to the European Union and Belgium, Caroline Millar, who was killed during World War I in Belgium in 1917 after taking part in the Battle of Fromelles.The ABC was invited to attend the event and Princess Astrid spoke exclusively to the ABC in a rare media interview.

"I would say as a mother and because I'm in the army, but on the medical side, so actually I always see … the civilians, and the ones who suffer the most, like children and the elderly, and women alone.Princess Astrid led the 315-strong trade delegation, which met with government officials, academics, medical researchers, and businesses during their 10-day economic mission to Australia, where they visited Sydney and Melbourne.

One-hundred-year-old Belgian luxury chocolate maker Godiva was one of the firms in the trade delegation.He is spearheading the expansion of the chocolatier here. And he is confident that Australians will also fall in love with Godiva, with the company aiming to open up to 25 stores in Australia during the next decade."The long term goal may be more of a 10-years range — we would like to aim for $100 million."While Belgium is known for its chocolates and beer, its top exports to Australia are pharmaceutical products, medicines, and farm machinery and parts.

"It's also an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to strategic sectors like infrastructure, medicine, and green technology, ensuring a successful partnership in the decade ahead and strengthening our alliance in today's complex world."
