The 23-year-old from Ipswich became a household name after winning her maiden grand slam singles title at the French Open this year and scaling the summit of women’s tennis.
She is now ranked the world’s number one singles tennis player by the Women’s Tennis Association – just the second Australian WTA singles number one after Evonne Goolagong Cawley. “Ash Barty inspires legions of fans with her dynamic tennis game, formidable serve and down-to-earth attitude,” the Australian of the Year Awards said.
As a First Nations woman, Barty also serves as the National Indigenous Tennis Ambassador for Tennis Australia.Barty’s father Robert said he was extremely proud of his daughter as he accepted the award on her behalf in Brisbane on Monday night. “If someone would have said to me at the start of the year that your daughter’s going to be number one in the world, then I would have said, ‘Wake up to yourself she’s not that good’. But she’s just done some incredible stuff,” he said.
