Australia's hopes of ending a 45-year Federation Cup drought have been thrown into disarray after world No.1 Ash Barty was defeated by France's No.1 Kristina Mladenovic

In what could only be described as an epic encounter fit for the occasion, Mladenovic came from a set down to win 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 in two hours and 32 minutes. The defeat ends Barty's run of 15 consecutive singles wins and means Australia will now have to rely on debutant Ajla Tomljanovic, who was thrashed 6-1 6-1 by Mladenovic on Saturday.

France have made a late change for the match, with Pauline Parmentier replacing Caroline Garcia in the match to face Tomljanovic.Mladenovic was lost for words after the marathon match, fighting back tears as she thanked the French fans. After cruising through the first set, Barty had several break-point opportunities in the eighth game of the second set, when Mladenovic was serving at 3-4.
