Jimmy Barnes, Paul Kelly, and Tones and I will be among the headline acts for a major music festival that will bring 1000 gigs to Sydney and regional NSW in a bid to revive the industry.

The Great Southern Nights event will begin in November in a further sign the state government expects the COVID-19 pandemic will be sufficiently under control by then to allow crowds to re-embrace live music.

The announcement follows decisions this week that the coronavirus pandemic would mean Splendour In The Grass would be pushed back until 2021 and Falls Festival would proceed but with an all-Australian line-up – a departure from its traditional use of international acts as headliners.

Live Performance Australia has previously raised concerns about how Australia's music scene would survive the shutdown with the industry selling almost 22 million tickets each year, generating $2.2 billion in revenue with NSW and Victoria accounting for about two-thirds of the demand.“I know fans are hungry for live music while lots of musos and roadies are just plain hungry. All these shows will be a great way to kick start the live music sector," Barnes said.
