Analysis: Barilaro unlikely to be the only loser as New York job saga rolls on | AlexSmithSMH

If Premier Dominic Perrottet was hoping that former deputy premier John Barilaro’s decision to relinquish his lucrative New York trade job would end the messy saga plaguing the government, he was seriously misguided.

The revelation is hugely damaging for the government. When Barilaro, the former trade minister who created the commissioner roles, was himself appointed to the plum posting in New York, Perrottet and Barilaro’s successor as trade minister Stuart Ayres stressed that the process was done at arms’ length from the government.

By mid-October, West was told by Brown that she would no longer be going to the US. If it had anything to do with concerns about her performance or ability to do the job, West says she was not told.Instead, Brown told her colleague that it was because of the change in government policy. At the same time, Brown warned West that her existing position as deputy secretary in Investment NSW was also under threat because money needed to be redirected elsewhere.

To make matters worse, a committee member had earlier leaked the transcript of in-camera evidence given by Brown at a hearing last week. It was an egregious abuse of parliamentary process. It also clearly enraged West, who told the inquiry that the first she had heard of Brown’s concerns with her was when the transcript was reported in the media.
