Plans for the re-opening of cinemas around Australia have been thrown into disarray by the Victorian government's decision to leave the audience cap per theatre at 20 people rather than proceeding with the plan to raise it to 50 | karlkwin

Plans for the re-opening of cinemas around Australia have been thrown into disarray by the Victorian government's decision to leave the audience cap per theatre at 20 people rather than proceeding with the plan to raise it to 50 from midnight on Sunday.

Sources at both chains suggested their access to JobKeeper payments and the imminence of school holidays might bolster the case for reopening as planned but the audience cap makes it financially problematic.Eddie Tamir, whose family owns the Randwick Ritz cinema in Sydney and three other independents in Melbourne, had been looking forward to throwing the doors open again next week.

Those restrictions vary from state to state, a scenario Hoyts CEO Damian Keogh says "has been a nightmare" as the major cinemas attempt to come up with their own timeframe for reopening.
