Australia must work to keep America fully engaged in the Indo-Pacific region in order to stop China from dominating it, according to former foreign minister Alexander Downer.

Mr Downer said Australia wants to know that China "cannot just dominate the region". "And to stop that happening, the Americans have to be fully engaged in the region and we've got to work to keep the Americans fully engaged".

Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Defence Minister Linda Reynolds recently opted for an in-person visit for the Australia–US Ministerial Consultation talks despite the offer of an online briefing. The US is calling for 'concrete cooperation' with freedom of navigation exercises asking for Australia to sail within 12 nautical miles of the islands.
