'I guess there are many ways to attempt silencing' journalist Mimimefo237 said after hearing she'd been denied an Australian visa

A Cameroonian journalist has accused Australia of trying to silence her after she was refused a visa to come to the country to speak at a press freedom event.

Integrity 20 chair Susan Forde said Ms Mefo was insulted by the suggestion that she would not return to a job that she loves and believed she had been judged on the basis of her nationality. "For some insane reason, [Australia's Ambassador to Germany's] team think that Australia is heaven where I will abandon my job in Germany, disappoint everyone at the AIJC in South Africa, just to remain there illegally," she tweeted. Ms Mefo had flights booked from Australia to South Africa after the Brisbane conference to deliver a prestigious lecture at an investigative journalism conference alongside Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz.

Index on Censorship, a London-based organisation which campaigns for free expression, condemned the Australian decision.

Mimimefo237 There must be a valid reason for Australian Governments to deny her a Visa. Why comment beforehand 🤔 Publicity Stunt ..

Mimimefo237 I’m sure she would do much better in Cameroon or Saudi Arabia or Iran or Somalia or Yemen or Pakistan or NZ or Syria or Turkey or Iraq or Russia or Uzbekistan or Turkmenistan or Canada or China freespeech

_midofo_ Mimimefo237 She should reapply as an au paire.

Mimimefo237 If she’s silenced, why the hell do we hear about it?

Mimimefo237 She spent time in jail not because she committed any crime it was also a way to silence her just like Australia ambassy did.

Mimimefo237 She also recently spent time in jail which will often get you excluded from visiting Australia. It sounds like we're only hearing half of the true story in this report.
