Flying on the PM's plane, no one in the press pack had any reason to sweat an unusual refuelling stopover, except, of course, for the convicted criminal in their midst, writes CUhlmann.

“What's been said is: 'We put our ethics above the law; we're not bound by law'," Chief Judge Rozenes said. "This is almost a badge of honour, upholding the best traditions of journalistic ethics … How can any court tolerate that?"

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” Australia is an opaque democracy when compared with its peers like the US, UK and New Zealand. Refugee boat arrivals that were once announced in a press release have been classified secret, Freedom of Information laws have been reduced to a joke by the liberal application of exemptions, “commercial-in-confidence” covers all manner of sins and our defamation laws are designed to make lawyers rich.

As the laws were being drafted assurances were made they would not be used against the media. Yet among the early letters sent by the Attorney-General’s Department was one to Nine’s chief executive Hugh Marks. It pointed to a news story based on footage shot by Al Jazeera that ended the political aspirations of One Nation candidate. That, the department reckoned, was reason for the network to consider adding its name to the transparency register.

Strict approach to press freedom is 'what democracy is all about' | Sky News AustraliaFormer Liberal MP Christopher Pyne says “it’s good for us to debate freedom of the press and whether we’ve achieved the right balance,” because “journalists are being put under the microscope”.\n \nMr Pyne told Sky News he was “not a commentator on current or previous government policies anymore,” but Australia “always had a stricter approach than a lot of other western nations around the world to press freedom'. \n\n'But that’s what democracy is all about,' he said. \n\n“In Australia we’ve always had a high level of trust for government, we don’t have the big brother approach that some governments have had over the years.'\n\nImage: News Corp Australia JournalismIsDead in the mainstream press. ABC climate alarmists are just 'democracy deniers' | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Chris Kenny has hit out at the “democracy deniers at the ABC” after Monday night’s Q and A panel saw talking heads “whining about why Australia hasn't declared a climate emergency”. \n\nMr Kenny said on Tuesday “Australians chose to stick with sensible climate action' by rejecting Labor's extreme policies at the last election. \n\n“Extreme climate policies were a large part of why Labor lost, even Labor frontbenchers have recognised that and are already moving to wind back their emissions reduction targets,' he said.\n\n“Whenever they get a result they don't like, democracy isn't working. \n\n“It seems democracy is working just fine, it is their fact-challenged, emotive, anti-democratic climate alarmism that is looking a little broken.”\n\nImage: News Corp Australia This from Kenny, who doesnt even know what democracy is.
