The Attorney General's department is “making a mockery” of Australia's stringent foreign interference laws, according to Liberal Senator James Paterson.

The Attorney General's department is “making a mockery” of Australia's stringent foreign interference laws, according to Liberal Senator James Paterson. Earlier this year the Attorney-General's department reportedly sent a letter to Mr Abbott asking him to register as an agent of foreign influence after the former prime minister agreed to address the inaugural Australian Conservative Political Action Conference. Mr Abbott reportedly declined the request.

The Coalition established the Foreign Influence Transparency Scheme at the end of 2018 in order to monitor individuals who may be attempting to influence Australian politics on behalf of a foreign power. Senator Paterson told Sky News the government is “disturbed” by the way the department interpreted the law. He said the legislation is designed to “safeguard” Australian sovereignty and not to target former prime ministers who are engaging in speaking tours.
