Racing editor at The Daily Telegraph Ray Thomas says the Melbourne Cup is “still Australia’s great race” and should "unite us rather than divide us because it’s a cultural icon”. Victoria Police officers have been preparing for a fresh wave of protests outside Flemington Racecourse on Tuesday.

Animal activists have promised to hold demonstrations after marching on the parade on Monday. Mr Thomas told Sky News the racing industry “has made a lot of inroads in the last few years, particularly with animal welfare and the re-homing of retired race horses”. “When it comes to the Melbourne Cup, sure everyone has a right to protest but this is Australia’s day and you hope this race unites the country rather than divides it,” he said.
