Governments ‘like the power to lock their citizens down’ | Sky News AustraliaState governments across Australia are “dragging their feet” when it comes to lifting restrictions, despite the threat posed by Covid-19 receding, according to the Institute of Public Affairs’ Daniel Wild.\n\nThere have been eight new cases of Covid-19 across Australia in the last 24 hours.\n\nAfter a peak in March, there are now less than 500 active cases, with 25 people in hospital, five in intensive care and two on ventilators.\n\nWhile states have begun easing restrictions, many businesses are still being forced to shut due to the pandemic.\n\nMr Wild said state governments seem reluctant to relinquish their newfound emergency powers.\n\n“They like the power, they like the extraordinary emergency power that the bureaucrats and the health officials have given them,” he said.\n\n“I think that’s exemplified by Daniel Andrews in Victoria, so they don’t want to let go of those powers.”\n\n“I also think if there was a quick and rapid re-opening it would essentially be an admission they got it a bit wrong.\n\n'That the lockdown measures were imposed a bit hard and went on a bit too long.”\n DanielWildIPA The lockdown has gone on too long, the state border closures should be open. Labor urges govt to include social housing in its HomeBuilder scheme | Sky News AustraliaLabor has urged the government to include social housing in its $688 million HomeBuilder scheme, arguing the current package is 'not big enough and not targeted enough' to boost the construction sector.\n\nUnder the proposal unveiled by Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Thursday, Australians wanting to build a new home or make major renovations will now be eligible for $25,000 grants to turbo-charge the construction industry.\n\nTo be eligible, individual applicants must earn less than $125,000 a year, or $200,000 for couples.\n\nThey must also sign a contract between July and December, and the new home can only be worth up to $750,000. \n\nThose wanting to renovate, must spend at least $150,000 on the work.\n\nShadow Minister for Home Affairs Kristina Keneally told Sky News she is concerned 'about the overall design of the program.'\n\n'We are going to be spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars and we are not going to see the benefit of increasing social housing stock,' she said.\n\n'Providing homes for mums fleeing domestic violence, veterans sleeping in parks, frontline workers who have worked very hard during this crisis and often can't get accommodation close to their work.\n\n'These are the real heroes, these are the real people we should be concerned about in the community.'\n\n KKeneally Forget social housing. How about those who actually bought a mortgage and a bomb of a house, because that's all they can afford? Working class can't afford to fix their homes. KKeneally Possibly the only thing I’ll ever agree with kkeneally on. KKeneally The criteria for this scheme is way out of reach of most people it shows how out of touch the government is. Just another benefit for the wealthier.

Government officially recognises site of Mount Dispersion massacreFor many years, the only thing marking the 'bloody and vicious' massacre on the Murray River has been a monument in the wrong place. Well timed TheirABC. I guess that is step 1 towards a better future. Step 2 = monuments for all the wars & death between the 500+ nations of peoples in Australia prior to Europeans arriving. We're now 'expected to pay for someone else's renovations': Bolt | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Andrew Bolt says here comes yet another scheme, costing lots of money to boot, to “fix an economy broken by government coronavirus bans”. \n\nSky News revealed on Sunday the government will introduce new homeowner grants to encourage construction of new homes, with the Australian revealing today the program will be available for renovations.\n\nMr Bolt said he is now expected to be “paying for someone’s renovations now” following the government’s new scheme which is aimed to promote construction in the country. \n\nThe scheme will allow people buying new constructed homes or renovating their existing home to access between five to ten thousand dollars.\n\nThe threshold is expected to be on homes worth $500,000 to $800,000. \n\nThe construction sector is expected to experience a significant slowdown, with demand constricting due to the COVID-19. \n\nAnalysis from Ernst & Young found housing construction this year is expected to fall from 160,000 nationally to 100,000.\n\nMr Bolt discussed the issue with the Grattan Institute's Brendan Coates, with Mr Coates saying 'there is a need for some sort of support to support the construction sector during this period'. \n Useless scheme. Maybe build more hospitals and roads. Bit like the government outsourcing all its IT and other stuff to foreign companies.
