When singer Rihanna launched her Fenty Beauty make-up line three years ago, a devoted fan base was born overnight but it was no ordinary celebrity launch |

On Friday, she launched Fenty Skin and loyalists began gushing in anticipation weeks before the launch.

At the same time, many celebrities are also now branching into skincare, and making claims that their serums and moisturisers will have actual efficacy, like protecting skin against pollution. Singer Selena Gomez’ new brand, Rare Beauty, is due to launch in the next couple of months, and Serena Williams became the face of Secret deodorant earlier this year. They’re following in the footsteps of, in the last few years alone, actors Drew Barrymore and Gwyneth Paltrow, musician Madonna, and models Lara Worthington, Jessica Hart, and Rosie Huntington Whitely.

Consumers should also question, she adds, whether a celebrity has teamed up with a reputable cosmetic chemist or dermatologist.
