A previously unreleased government report warned that Brisbane stood to miss out on $11 million a day unless tourists could be convinced to stay.

Brisbane struggles to compete with the Gold and Sunshine coasts, let alone Sydney and Melbourne, because tourists who come to the Queensland capital don’t find enough to keep them there.

Proposing six new tourism drawcards, the consultants emphasised that Brisbane was at risk of falling short of its tourism goals and missing out on up to $11 million a day. Northshore Hamilton, which will become the athletes’ village, had been the proposed site of a major aquarium complex that could have been completed this year. The consultants argued an aquarium would revitalise the riverfront, possibly with a super yacht marina, and attract more than 630,000 visitors per annum.– but also daytime drawcards as part of a “Technology, Entertainment, Esport and Night Activation” precinct.

For the study, the consultants engaged with more than a dozen government agencies and tourism stakeholders and acknowledged that “Brisbane is growing up” with several major projects being completed.“But with visitation figures still below those of Sydney and Melbourne, there is a pressing need for Brisbane to leverage the significant investment pipeline by delivering attractions that transform the city into a hub from a gateway and increase stay and spend,” the study found.
