LAURA TINGLE, CHIEF POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT: The Albanese Government executed a major energy policy backflip today which was met with outrage from the crossbench, economists and environmentalists.
LAURA TINGLE: The unveiling today of the Albanese Government’s future gas strategy means voters are now being offered energy and climate policies by both major political parties that economic and environmental experts believe have serious flaws. The new policy bears a striking resemblance to what the Morrison government touted as its gas-led recovery - a policy which the now energy minister once described as:ROD SIMS, CHAIR, SUPERPOWER INSTITUTE: I think it damages our credibility internationally. This basically says, no, we're going to keep relying on fossil fuels. It is going to be a gas-fired future.
ANTHONY ALBANESE: Gas powered generation is something that firms renewables. For example, you have just to give one example, what Rio Tinto are doing. They've just signed the biggest deal for renewables that has ever been signed anywhere in Australia but what they regard as necessary is a firming capacity to be provided by gas.
