Astronomer Fred Watson shares his top 10 images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope over the past 30 years.

For 30 years and counting, the Hubble Space Telescope has taken us on a journey through the cosmos from auroras on Jupiter to some of the earliest galaxies in the universe.

"It's just given us an extraordinary window on the universe that really has been unmatched ... by ground-based telescopes, said Fred Watson, Australia's Astronomer-at-large. Since it was launched on 24 April 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope has captured hundreds of thousands of stunning images.Named after astronomer Edwin Hubble, the telescope's original mission was to peer into deep space to help resolve a long-standing debate aboutAfter an initial hiccup with its lens, which was fixed by astronauts in 1993, scientists soon realised the telescope could do much more. It's been working ever since.

"Hubble's superb imaging qualities in visible light reveal the planet's turbulent cloud belts and its Great Red Spot, a long-lived cyclone, but additional imagery in the ultraviolet spectrum shows swirls of light in its northern Arctic," Professor Watson explained. When the Hubble Space Telescope is finally retired sometime within the decade, nothing will rival its capacity to take high resolution ultraviolet images.Visible light image of the Pillars of Creation

Triple-zero calls drop in Victoria, but paramedics brace for surgePeople are making 30 per cent fewer calls to triple zero since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, but about 200 calls each day are from people with COVID-19 symptoms. I have to hope the decrease in calls means people are no longer wasting resources by sending fake calls to emergency services, having realised now how important it is for those that need help to get it in time. So people are calling in flu symptoms. We knew this would happen. Surely you mean 'suspected' Covid-19 symptoms.

'Go home': Backpackers face stone throwing and abuse amid coronavirus pandemicBackpacker workers are losing their jobs and being told to go home by local community members amid fears they will spread coronavirus. Backpackers should not be in Australia at this time of pandemic. Assisted flights should probably have been organised early to get them back to their country of origin. Onya, bogan Aussies. 😔 They probably should go home. Nothing against them being here in better times but they CAN be a liability that we don't need.
