Readers are shocked by the ALP’s backdown on issues close to many ALP voters’ concerns - the treatment of detainees, its approval of new coal mines and gas fields, and its watering down on proposed emissions.

The ALP has form in announcing good policy only to renege when faced with backlash from vested interests and alarming polls. The most dramatic instance was the shemozzle following its proposed tax on super-profits of mining companies, leading to a backdown, change of leader and contributing to its loss of government.

Small wonder that independents are increasing their popularity as the major parties prove themselves unable to see the national good, but only their electoral advantage. Could we not have a party that puts national interest first, and leads rather than follows polls and the Murdoch press? Why not make a city for people without reliance on the car? We have 500 trams. Let’s build a system for 5000 sustainable trams and lead the world.

It’s an easy fix to stop sports betting leading to more harm by reducing the highly addictive and enticing ads played on the AFL app and games, and limiting beloved former sports players promoting them.The ranting of radio shock jocks and morning TV news programs regarding ″⁣off the books drug testing″⁣ in the AFL need to be put in perspective.
