Albanese government accused of 'cancelling Australia Day by stealth'

The Albanese government has been accused of"cancelling Australia Day by stealth" following their decision to no longer require local councils to hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day.

When asked about the decision, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese rejected the merits of changing the date saying that he supports Australia Day and the government supports Australia Day. "They could have held the line and said to councils, if you don't want to do a citizenship ceremony on Australia Day, if you don't want to be celebrating people becoming citizens on a day when we celebrate the nation, then we'll find somebody else to do it," Mr Hargreaves told Sky News Australia.

Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Andrew Giles, also announced that two Melbourne local councils would have their ability to hold citizenship ceremonies restored.
