Australia is facing a “national crisis” of domestic violence against women and children, said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who will hold a snap meeting of national cabinet on Wednesday.
Albanese told the rally that organisers had initially said they did not want him speak, which he was ok with - and which they denied - while demanding he agree Australia faced a national emergency. After about 40 minutes, the prime minister stood to address the crowd. “We need to make sure that this isn’t just up to women. It’s up to men to change men’s behaviour as well.”Earlier on Sunday, federal MPs across party lines and the NSW police commissioner played down the need for a national royal commission into violence against women, arguing that governments can be – and are – acting right now., Rishworth, Nationals senate leader Bridget McKenzie and independent MP Dai Le also did not back the need for a new national inquiry.
“That is signed up by both the Commonwealth and the states and territories. That’s been accompanied by an action plan and $2.3 billion of investments in programs and responses to domestic family and sexual violence. That is a record amount of funding put in,” she said. She stopped short of backing a national royal commission into domestic violence, arguing that was up to the government to decide. But she said the government had promised more frontline services but they were not present on the ground, particularly in the regions where these violent acts are being perpetrated.
