Despite surging mental health issues, some mental health workers have found a range of children do not find home schooling as difficult as others, with online learning suiting particular personality types. | ClayLucas

Child counsellors and psychiatrists have voiced their concern as new state government figures show a surge in teens presenting at emergency departments for mental health issues during Victoria’s lockdowns and school closures.

He said the latest prolonged shutdown of schools had revealed “the undiagnosed and unrecognised issues in our community – children’s usual coping mechanisms have been taken away”. “Parents need to look after themselves and be supported – that is what is going to keep the kids OK.” Mr Chellew expects the percentage of children not attending once school returns will rise to about 15 per cent.

He always has his therapy dog Max – a three-year-old Pomeranian crossed with a Japanese spitz – with him during these sessions.

ClayLucas My daughter loved it but then she's an introvert and don't like socialising

ClayLucas I call bullshit. The vast majority are struggling & schools must be open next term. Talk to qualified psychologists like MCG58 FFS enough mediocrity Dial up the pressure - not excuses for more incompetence at springst shadowpandemic

ClayLucas One day we read the age article about how our children find homeschooling very difficult. In this article, they mentioned children do not find homeschooling difficult. 🤔

ClayLucas Gosh - you've just realised that? Australia has run a remote learning system for decades without any noticeable (or headline worthy) issues, in the outback. You've probably heard of it, there have been dozens of documentaries on it over the years.

ClayLucas Since when do we care about mental health when for the past decades its been something that doesn't exist and u can just take a tablet for? 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

ClayLucas Agreed, 85% (guesstimate of my cohorts) seem to be fine. That's still a few who find remote learning difficult, but most of those seem to find schooling trickly in any case with organisational and motivation issues. Still, it is a real pastoral issue for those.

New pop-up mental health clinics to open across Melbourne and regional VictoriaVictoria will spend an extra $22 million on mental health, including $13 million on new pop-up clinics across the state. That's wonderful news. They could probably dial it back a bit if the govt dropped all Covid lockdowns & restrictions and started speaking with positivity about life in Victoria, instead of threats & violence from the police. I imagine most people would feel a whole lot better counselling is treating the symptoms. It has limited effect until you address the problems
