North Sydney Council will bankroll air testing where motorway smokestacks have been proposed within hundreds of metres of schools after state bureaucrats were accused of backflipping on a promise to install monitors there.
Parents of students at Anzac Park Public School said the Roads and Maritime Service promised them in 2017 the air monitors would be installed in or near the grounds. "It's not satisfactory as far as we're concerned," she said. "We have no idea about the baseline air quality we have around our school to begin with."
An RMS spokesperson said its air quality experts had considered a "range of locations" before deciding to place the monitors at Naremburn, giving priority to places with power, clear from trees and that did not impact on public space."Air quality monitoring data from the precise location of proposed ventilation outlets or tunnel portals is not required to develop the project's air quality model," she said.
"Ventilation facilities are designed to safely disperse the emissions created by cars ... without negatively impacting the surrounding areas," she said.Fiona Morris But Mayor Jilly Gibson said the council had been lobbying the state government to do emission testing near Ernest Street for months – to no avail.
