Amid the state government's program to air-condition state schools, there have been 19 potential asbestos incidents.

There have been 19 potential asbestos incidents at Queensland schools under the state government's program to install air-conditioning in classrooms and school buildings. There have been 12 notifiable cases of potential asbestos exposure at Queensland state schools under the state government's air-conditioning program

"My understanding is where those cases required notification, particularly to workplace health and safety, they were done, and in some cases they weren't required to be notified because they were discovery rather than actual disturbance," Mr Cook said. The recommendations also said schools should have a more robust system of indicating the presence of asbestos rather than by "just displaying a notice sign at the reception office of the school".

The letter said that the contractor had worked in Block 2 and 3, known to contain asbestos, on November 10 and October 30 last year respectively, and Block 5, which records showed did not contain asbestos but access was restricted as a precautionary measure.Mr Cook told senate estimates the contractor was advised by "school admin to clean dust and debris identified by a staff member in early November".

In senate estimates, Minister Grace Grace said she believed as soon as it became apparent that the necessary action was taken.
