Victoria has recorded its deadliest day of the pandemic, with five deaths recorded over a 24-hour period, three of which were aged-care residents.

Deaths from aged care homes now account for more than a quarter of the death toll in Victoria, which is sitting at 49. Authorities are particularly concerned about St Basil’s Homes for the Aged in Fawkner, which has 73 confirmed cases of the coronavirus.

Commonwealth officials have now taken over operations of the facility as they work to bring the infection rate under control. Estia Health in Ardeer also has 67 confirmed cases, Estia Health in Heidelberg has 34 and Menarock Life Aged Care in Essendon has 55.
