AFL boss Gillon McLachlan has confirmed via a press conference that the 2020 AFL season has been shortened to 17 games, with every team to play each other once.

"Given the uncertainty of what lies ahead, and to give us maximum flexibility, while preserving the integrity of the competition, the Toyota AFL Premiership Season will be reduced to 17 rounds with every team playing each other once," McLachlan said. McLachlan adds that "the decisions we have made give us flexibility across the 2020 year and we will stay closely in touch with government and health authorities as we phase into the next few months".

"We are working through a range of ideas, including the idea of a supplementary playing list being available to clubs," McLachlan said.
