AFL legend Shaun Smith has been awarded a momentous million-dollar payout due to concussion damages suffered during his playing career. AFL 9WWOS

Smith said he had actually forgotten about the insurance policy that was in place during his playing career that made him eligible for the claim, but with veteran player agent Peter Jess, he was able to pursue the payout."But it's been well-documented my troubles over the last three to four years or so in the press, and we explored that with Peter Jess and myself.

"I can't put a date on it when I started feeling bad, but I know after analysing stuff it's probably been 20 years I haven't been doing that well," he said. "The main thing we're saying is that footy is a contact sport, it' a collision sport and in any sport there's going to be potential of a concussion," Smith said.

"If you come back too early from a severe or even a mild concussion, it's going to do some damage and you're going to suffer down the track."that the Smith case could be a "game-changer", however he warned that many past and present AFL players may not be eligible for the same sort of claim under the league's insurer AMP, unless they have extremely severe conditions such as Parkinson's disease or motor neurone disease.

Forget the red carpet, the AFL's Brownlow Medal count is going 'virtual' in 2020In another forced break from tradition, the AFL's best and fairest ceremony will not take place as a gala event in Melbourne this year. Instead, it will be staged as a made-for-TV event because of COVID-19 restrictions. Any truth in the rumour that Richmond players will be at a Gold Coast Strip Club and will be dining on kebabs? so maybe sponsored by cotton on this year? So this year they can all rack up on the dining room table instead of the toilets
