Afghanistan veteran Phillip Thompson says MPs should continue to use the term “thank you for your service” after the Veterans Affairs Minister voiced objections to it. veterans thankyouforyourservice

revealed a memo circulated within the department shortly after Veterans’ Affairs Minister Andrew Gee was appointed to the portfolio in August, staff were informed that he no longer wanted the phrase used in press releases, websites or social media posts.

Mr Thompson, the Liberal MP for Herbert in north Queensland, was wounded in action in 2009 when an improvised explosive device detonated within a metre of him. “We work in a place that sends soldiers to war,” he said. “We work in a place that sends sons, daughters mothers and fathers into harm’s way. We work in a place that has a responsibility to look after our veterans and their families. As a soldier, to all our defence force personal current or former, thank you for your service.”The term, which originated in the United States, has become widespread following the events of September 11 and the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts.

In a combative interview with 2GB’s Ben Fordham on Thursday, Mr Gee said the phrase “can be used when it’s appropriate”.

Should we also use it for emergency services workers, teachers etc. All public servants maybe? Why stop with the ADF?

While singing the Star Spangled Banner I assume?

F*ck that American BS. Whenever I get the chance to speak to those in the military, I just say “good on you, digger”.

Drinking not the cause of bad behaviour in Parliament, former staffers say“I think alcohol can be an exacerbating factor, but the root cause of bad behaviour is gender inequality, inequality in power relationships, the feeling that many staff have that they could be dismissed at the whim of their employer.' It has a work place culture, just as mining did, banks did and the local law practice (with the same root cause). Government established Equal Employment Opportunity practices and controls to address them. Parliament dodged these disciplines and clearly needs to get up to date. When you know that you'll suffer more for reporting sexual harrassment than the harrasser you don't say anything. When everyone doesn't say anything harrassers feel free to abuse whoever they want and the end result is the disgusting state of federal Parliament we see today. The precariate... your govt has deliberately created this sub-class of servants. Who else would make your morning coffee, drive the school bus, hold that lollypop sign, collect your garbage... Only those fearful of an income.
