The Afghan Australian Community of Victoria group has criticised the state's Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton after he made direct reference to that community during a daily briefing on new coronavirus cases.
“That is absolutely the case here and I know they're motivated to get on top of this as much as anyone." Zahida Popal says Afghan community members are"concerned and disappointed" by Prof Sutton's comments.Deputy Chief Health Officer Allen Cheng confirmed there have been no new cases in the Casey cluster overnight, after recording five new cases on Thursday.
“The Afghan Australian community of Victoria is deeply hurt and concerned by the inferences made in the media and to an extent, it has caused a sense of distrust in the system.

If there is a problem they have to accept it. I see everyday here in Parramatta people from middle eastern countries happily chatting without mask or physical distancing themselves. It is a cultural problem, these people come from countries where people don't respect the system

Perhaps it’s time to reference communities as it would appear they’re not getting the message. I’m a migrant myself and I got the message. Why didn’t they? Let’s fix that message together.
How does one become a community leader?
We can no longer accept individuals or communities anywhere in Australia failing to adhere to current or future lockdowns. Yes it is time to start naming & shaming & increasing penalties to very high levels as future health & economic effects are of more waves are too disastrous.

Pretty sure Prof Sutton, of all people, who has cultural insights and understanding after doing medical & humanitarian work in Afghanistan, did not mean it in a 'singling out' way, but rather in a bid to offer support. This criticism is a bit rich IMHO.
There are some people who just wait to be offended.

He made the comment because he would have had information about the cluster and contact tracing. So I think he knew that the 5 families were connected and what their cultural background was!

Whilst its unfair to potentially single out a certain community at no point should any anyone be visiting one another at the moment. I really hope they can get this 'cluster' under control so all of Melbourne can move to the next stage in 10 days time.
Yes it’s not fair , we suffered in the first outbreak from virus after the Eid celebrations. Now they blame us again because it’s Muslims again just visit family . We need better support and funding .

It is time to call out offenders, they are deliberately acting illegally with the consequences that many, many people are both at risk of infection & of major economic problems. We can no longer tolerate this & excuse this behaviour. There is no excuse for breaching lockdown now.
