New Zealand’s Israel Adesanya has franked his reputation as the most exciting talent in the UFC, becoming the middleweight champion in spectacular fashion at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.
"I’m real petty. I remember everything like an elephant. I was in the nose bleeds [at UFC 193] and now I made his [Whittaker’s] nose bleed," Adesanya said after the fight.Marvel Stadium broke its UFC crowd record with 57,127 people, including Hollywood heavyweights Charlie Hunnam and Chris Hemsworth, turning out to surpass the 56,214 that went to UFC 193 in 2015.
After a cagey start, Whittaker tried to dictate proceedings and end the fight early as he launched some seriously powerful punch and kick attempts. Meanwhile, Adesanya was calm and composed under fire and was prepared to hang back and let the 28-year-old expend more energy than him.Adesanya has a reputation for being a sniper and he picked his moment beautifully at the end of the first round. He sent Whittaker to the ground with a right hook straight to the face, which split him open.
Late in the second round, Whittaker landed a heavy hit to Adesanya’s head but the Kiwi quickly turned defence into offence and instantaneously responded with a pair of lightning-quick punches to Whittaker’s face that rocked and sent him to the floor.
