Australian Capital Territory to legalise cannabis - but be careful how you share it

People sharing cannabis with a friend at a party would be still be charged with drug supply, despite new cannabis possession laws set to be legislated on Wednesday.

Under the new laws, put forward by Labor backbencher Michael Pettersson, adults would be allowed to possess 50 grams of cannabis and grow two plants in their home. The bill is expected to pass the ACT Assembly on Wednesday, after debate on several amendments."We'll work to make [the laws] as effective as it can be," he said. The ACT's top cop said stores would be banned from selling cannabis seeds to Canberra adults under drug supply laws.

Despite the laws set to come into effect, the ACT Law Society said earlier this week police officers would still be able to charge someone with cannabis possessionChief Police Officer Johnson said a decision on whether someone would be charged under ACT law or Commonwealth law would depend on individual circumstances, and said it would be a challenge for officers.

"Every day, police officers doing their duty do make decisions taking into account the circumstances of the occasion."

Still illegal to buy it in the ACT so Canberra still as cold and boring as it was last week.

If it's still illegal to purchase, how can people lawfully be in possession of it?

Would be great if ScottMorrisonMP would make CBD Cannabis oil legal in Australia

To the left hand side?

I wish they’d do that in NSW too. Be good not to have to buy it off dealers. Common sense law that follows a big chunk of the developed world of late.

ACT legalises marijuana for personal use | Sky News AustraliaACT Labor politician Michael Pettersson says he doesn’t believe there will be tension between territory and Commonwealth laws, after the Barr government legalised marijuana for personal use on Wednesday.\n\nUnder the private member's bill brought forward by Mr Pettersson, Canberrans over the age 18 will be allowed to possess 50 grams of cannabis and grow two plants.\n\nThe law is an Australian first.\n\nThe ACT opposition is against the bill, with shadow attorney-general Jeremy Hanson arguing the bill will lead to “perverse outcomes.”\n\nPossession and using cannabis will still be illegal under Commonwealth law, and Canberrans could still face federal prosecution.\n\nMr Pettersson told Sky News however he’d be “amazed” if prosecutors brought a charge against a marijuana-user in the ACT.\n\n“Prosecutors will not be bringing charges because, quite simply, there is a complete defence to the commonwealth drug charge,” he said. “There won’t be a territory offence and they’ll have a complete defence to the Commonwealth charge.” PetterssonMLA auspol We ALL know why?
