It’s your dog Clancy here, writing from my home in the city. Here’s a question for you: when was the last time you saw a dog looking at themselves in the mirror? That’s right. It never happens.
“Oh, that’s a lovely dress,” they’ll say. Or “Look at your great new haircut!” Or – sometimes, under their breath – “He’s a bit plump for that shirt.”They spend a fortune buying clothes, and then rush to the hairdresser to get an expensive dye treatment for their head fur, or – even weirder – head to the beautician to have their body fur completely removed.
Or there’s Trevor, a border collie who is entirely covered in black fur, except for one leg, which is entirely white. Humans might think that Trevor has had an accident with a paint tin, but the splash of white has the advantage of making him instantly recognisable, even at a distance. I spot him immediately, even if he’s at the other end of the park, and go running towards him. The reason? I know he has a fun personality.
When someone compliments me with the expression “Good dog” – an occurrence that borders on the routine – they are referring to my eager and loyal character, not to the colour of my fur or the angle of my jaw.
I have often thought about this. Also the obsession with gender behaviour. No other animal behaves in a masculine or feminine way and if they didn't they wouldn't judge each other. It's all so ridiculous.
