ACCC chairman Rod Sims has warned retailers selling rapid antigen tests for more than $20 that they must “urgently explain” the inflated price tag as part of the consumer watchdog’s crackdown on pharmacies and small business operators seeking to take advantage of the shortage of tests.
The inflated pricing on RATs has continued despite the ACCC’s announcement on January 4 that it was launching an investigation into potential price gouging. “There are several businesses that have repeatedly come to our notice thanks to the information provided by the public. We are asking those businesses to urgently explain the prices they are charging.”
The ACCC will ask any business charging more than $20 per test to explain the reasoning behind the cost, Mr Sims said.
hijessicayun Go ACCC… Hit them with the usual wet lettuce…
hijessicayun Not a 'urgently explain' how ever will those businesses cope? Surely that's a bit harsh. Not even a 'please explain' Gosh. The ACCC has outdone itself this time. First their decisive action on banks and now this?
hijessicayun Please, oh please?
hijessicayun We all gotta eat. Take it easy
hijessicayun All talk no action, so fine, prosecute, and publicly shame
hijessicayun Wtf? Now into the third week of gouging? So ACCC reporting gouging to the AFP is the quick, strong and effective action Morrison promised?
hijessicayun And they should. But is the Australian government going to be asked to urgently explain why the private sector was chosen for RAT distribution and what their plan was to ensure equitable access? ACCC Auspol ScottyDoesntGiveARats ScottMorrisonMP
hijessicayun Explain!!! WTF
hijessicayun Capitalism.
hijessicayun Classic supply & demand isn't it?
hijessicayun Make them free. Price gouging stops. Simples.
hijessicayun unlucky
hijessicayun they have to make a buck before the government gives us all free RATs
hijessicayun Another “pleads explain”, like petrol price gouging. Nothing ever happens.
