Ms Vadiveloo also sees firsthand how Indigenous children struggle to learn in a Western education system.
She and the National Indigenous Youth Education Coalition believe one way to change the education system is to listen to our young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. "Their brilliance and their intelligence and knowledge need to be understood, respected and held up in our systems. Whether it's education, health, economies or any other systems."Throughout her career, Ms Vadiveloo has seen how programs can be successful if they are created by Indigenous people for Indigenous people.
"We have so many amazing Aboriginal educators that are out there, it's not like we're starting from ground zero," she said.To truly help Indigenous children and communities achieve real change, both Ms Vadiveloo and Ms McQuire recommend learning about your local history.

How much do you think this will help in Closing the Gap?
This young kid is from a remote community. Most indigenous people live in metro or near metro areas of Australia. These are two different groups, which inigenous leaders need to acknowledge and address.

FACT CHECK A traditional education is fine if you want them to grow up to be hunter/gatherers. If you want them to grow up to be doctors, lawyers, leaders in the community, then they are going to have to go to school. Conclusion: DEBUNKED DefundTheABC
That smile of Dujuan’s is the most heartwarming way to start the day. A future leader in the making.
All the racists commenting 'What can I learn from them?' Sounds like 'How am I supposed to learn something new from experiencing a different culture, learning a new language, or listening to others peoples experiences?!' None of you travel very much, do you.
Help yourself!
They are children just like every other child. Good parenting is number 1 priority.
No worries. Let him do whatever he wants. Asian & white kids will streak ahead, become successful & wealthy. He'll still be sitting in the dust. Adult do-gooders are the fuck-uppers.
ConceptualJames no doubt we can see how this will end.
Pity the film producers could not make the sub titles big enough to read.
Absolutely they don’t need to be ‘fixed’. Understanding, a new needs based and appropriate learning model, putting hope and faith into the mix and creating optimism is the way to go. Let the real educators help here, please!!!
Condescension.
Doesnt that, like everyother child on the planet, depend on what they have experienced and endured in their little lives. Each child has a unique set of experiences and challenges. Whether they are indigenous is just part of the story.
School report says “Dajuan enjoys reading...and is continuing to develop reading strategies such as looking at the pictures and the first letter to predict unknown words.” No wonder he is having trouble at school. scienceofreading simpleviewofreading structuredliteracy
Education, protection, shelter, health. If the family can provide that, then fine. If they can’t, someone must intervene on these kids behalf. No matter where they come from.
Domestic violence & drug abuse within family & community are now main causes of inter generational trauma for aborigines. Intervention is the only way to break the cycle for these children.
Sorry but this is twisted. Our country offers FREE education to ALL children from all cultural backgrounds. What a country full of privileged ppl we have become from ALL colours!!! In other countries children do not get this luxury / right!
The things we could learn from them!
Waste of space.
Yes you would know PC global times ABC 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
fixed = be white
Facts bro
Let kids do what they want, maybe? The whole western school system is designed to train people in mindless obedience to crap instituted by bad or mediocre hierarchic managers. Indigenous life is exactly the opposite: think for yourself, honour and respect people who love you.
If Aboriginals were treated equally maybe they would have a chance. But racists see them as unable to take care of themselves and weigh them down with government programs so they have no drive to do better
Reads like someone told him he can either be a “bush kid” or go to school. But not both.
It literally says it in the article, he struggled with standard education because he didnt attend regularly. It has nothing to do with the difficulty of learning two systems at once, most Chinese and Muslim parents send their kids to 2x schools to learn both systems.
Simple. Listen to them and let them practice their ancestors ways ,because that is what will teach us how wrong our western way of living is wrong ,broken and diseased. They don't need fixing ,we do! Plain to see.
'he has healing powers'
Nope, they just need an education.
Cry cry cry. If you don’t want your kids educated by the “white” teachers don’t send them to school then. But don’t turn around and complain that you are disadvantaged because that’s BS. You can still be proud and learn about your heritage (as I have) and learn maths, english...
