As summer draws closer in Alice Springs, and there's uncertainty about whether any drop-in centres for young people will be open next school holidays, residents' concerns about youth crime are growing.

Sleep hasn't been the same for Kate Uilisone since intruders went through her home, and the memories of what happened that night still give her nightmares one year on.Break-ins in Alice Springs have risen by 60 per cent in the past year, and youth prison numbers have also jumped

The hardest part of the break-in for the mother-of-two was learning a 16-year-old boy had entered her toddler's bedroom, as the child lay in bed."I think there'll always be this looming feeling of 'will it happen again, when will it happen again?'" Mrs Uilisone said. They've just spent another $5,000 installing roller shutters over the bedroom windows, an addition Mrs Uilisone said she needed for "peace of mind"."But there are so many other things I'd prefer to be spending our money on."After the break-in, Mrs Uilisone said she found herself looking at kids on the street "differently" and credits victim conferencing, with the boy who went into her daughter's room, for changing her perspective.

Alyawarre man and recently appointed Alice Springs councillor Michael Liddle makes weekly trips to the town's youth detention centre to run cultural workshops with the children inside. "We need more soldiers getting the young people to turn around and say, 'c'mon, this is a better way."
