Australia are in danger of missing direct qualification for the Super 12 stage of next year’s Twenty20 World Cup at home | wutube SMHsport

Australia are in danger of missing direct qualification for the Super 12 stage of next year’s Twenty20 World Cup at home, potentially throwing a massive spanner in the works for tournament organisers.

The winners and finalists in the Middle East automatically advance to the Super 12s for 2022 along with the next six highest-ranked teams. Another danger could come from the Mickey Arthur-coached Sri Lanka, 10th with 229 points, who are yet to reach the Super 12s for this year but will be suited by the slow conditions. If Arthur’s men finish top of their first-round group, they would go into Australia’s draw.

Organisers would also lose control of where to fixture the hosts, possibly resulting in the drawcard side playing away from the major venues. Ranked No.1 late last year, the Australians were considered one of the teams to beat for the event in its original October 2020, slot only for it to be postponed two years due to the pandemic. There is, however, an air of confidence in the Australian camp now that the likes of Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis are back in the fold after missing the winter tours.
