Twelve months on from the bushfires that devastated Tathra, life is somehow about to get even tougher for some.

There are some in Tathra already living in rebuilt homes, and others are making progress — most hoping to be enjoying next Christmas in their rebuilt living room.

Laurie Rose is among them, using the bricks from his former home as a decorative feature in the new place. "It has been 12 months of quite a lot of hardship, getting everything approved again, working out what we're going to build and how we're going to do it," he said. He was among the many residents who lost their homes, using the anniversary to walk together through the burned-out bushland down to the beach.

Mr Rose said it would take more than a year for the scars the fire left, both on the town and among its people, to heal."I just took the attitude that it happened. We wish it didn't, but it did. And I've just got to deal with it, fix it, and make it as best we can again."
