A long Ashes series is approaching its conclusion, but on a day where the Australians could have seen the fifth Test slip away entirely, they proved there is still fight in their weary legs.

By this point there is a strange familiarity between the teams, like two roommates who have come to begrudgingly accept each other's bad habits. We may not really like each other all that much, but there's comfort in knowing exactly what to expect each and every day.

With things seeming to be spiralling out of control, this was a day for Australia to prove how much this Test means to it. The answer was resounding. Smith's innings was gritty with the odd flourish, only ended when he tried to raise his rate. He's played better Ashes innings, but few have exuded leadership in the way this one did.

In fairness to Khawaja and Labuschagne, the bowling was fantastic. England moved the ball more than it has all series and consistently placed it in threatening places.
