Inspired by and starring the women in director Franco Lolli's life, this film offers a clear-eyed portrait of life's everyday struggles — and joys.

For single mother Silvia , the subject of Colombian domestic drama Litigante, life's no walk in the park — it's more of a race through a battlefield.

As Silvia rushes to put one fire out after the other, pinballing desperately between her myriad obligations, the film allows very little respite. The character of Silvia was partly inspired by Lolli's second cousin, Carolina Sanin — so when the director couldn't find the right actor, he cast her. Leticia Gómez, who plays Silvia's terminally ill mother, was in remission from her own cancer during filming.

Restrained in tone and plot, Litigante draws emotion from its steadfast, fine-spun realism; it is clear early on that Lolli favours verisimilitude over sentimentality or contrivance. When watching Silvia engage in yet another futile argument with her mother or once again get told off at the office, you might wonder: What exactly is the point of escaping our own lives just to live another, fairly unpleasant one for 90 minutes — particularly without the relief of escapism or a clear message to take away.
