A wave of cloud and rainfall called the Madden-Julian oscillation is one of the reasons WA's north has had drastically lower rainfall and cyclonic behaviour this summer.

The MJO is an eastward-moving pulse of cloud and rainfall that travels around the planet close to the equator, returning to its initial starting point every 30 to 60 days on average.

It can be an important influence on the timing of the active and inactive monsoon phases, and can lead to the formation of cyclones or tropical lows which bring widespread rain to northern Australia. "It's essentially a wave of weather that moves around the equator region, north and south, from the west to the east, over a fairly regular period," BOM spokesman Neil Bennett said.

"There are different phases to it and it depends on which phase arrives in Australia whether we have an enhanced monsoon or whether we have little in the way of any monsoon activity."The BOM can track the timing and the intensity of the pulse heading towards Australia. "The MJO really does drive a lot of our convective activity during the summer months in conjunction with either an El Nino or a La Nina system that's operating across our area during the summer months.
