A 'common drug' has provided an exciting development which 'seems like it will reduce the death toll significantly for those on a ventilator' suffering from the deadly coronavirus says the AMA President of Western Australia Dr Andrew Miller.

A "common drug" has provided an exciting development which "seems like it will reduce the death toll significantly for those on a ventilator" suffering from the deadly coronavirus says the Australian Medical Association President of Western Australia Dr Andrew Miller. On Thursday, Health Minister Greg Hunt revealed the medical expert panel approved the use of dexamethasone in Australia as a COVID-19 treatment.

In clinical trials, the widely available steroid showed to decrease the risk of death in coronavirus patients, particularly for those requiring ventilators. Researchers in the United Kingdom announced their success with the drug on Wednesday. Discussing the drug, Dr Miller told Sky News "the Brits have done a really good trial and they've tested it on severely ill people in the ICU for their lung inflammation".

Coronavirus update: 'Major breakthrough' as trial shows cheap steroid can reduce COVID-19 death ratesOxford University scientists are hailing the use of cheap and widely used steroid Dexamethasone as a 'major breakthrough' in the treatment of coronavirus after it is found to reduce death rates in COVID-19 patients. Dexamethasone is a potent anti-inflammatory drug. It should be emphasised that it doesn’t kill viruses so people don’t start using it indiscriminately like they did with hydoxychloroquine.
