The father of Belgian backpacker Theo Hayez, who has been missing for a month from Byron Bay, has spoken of the family's gratitude for the local community's support

The father of Belgian backpacker Theo Hayez, who has been missing for a month from Byron Bay, has spoken of the family's gratitude for the local community's support.

The emotional dinner was organised by the family and locals who have led the nearly month-long effort to find their son.after just a couple of days in Byron Bay.The 18-year-old was last seen leaving the popular Cheeky Monkey's bar in Byron on Friday night, May 31. Meeting the community who searched ceaselessly through swamps, bushland, beaches and back roads, his parents hugged and spoke with many of the volunteers."Their support they bring to us is giving us force to keep faith. Without the support in Belgium and here in Australia, I think we should be in the couch with tissues, crying all the day," Mr Hayez said.

"It's like we're just a big family now. We are Byron Bay community with them now, all of us," she said. When she arrived, Lisa didn't expect the community to be there for them but the locals were "incredible".“Thanks to them so much for everything. They keep us alive. If we’re here now, not crying in bed and everything, it’s just thanks to them.”The family declined to speak or comment on the investigation other than to say they backed the police.
