It’s the last chance saloon for Mack Horton while Kaylee McKeown is a genuine world record chance in the 100m backstroke at the pointy end on day two of the Olympic trials.

First up we have Kaylee McKeown, who is a genuine chance of breaking a world record in the 100m backstroke. She came within 0.06s of equalling Regan Smith’s world record in last month’s Sydney Open.

Mitch Larkin will be looking for a sizzling time in the 100m backstroke, while all eyes are on Ariarne Titmus in the Women’s 400m freestyle. This from our man Lutton after some drama earlier today: Mack Horton has been handed an Olympic lifeline after a dramatic morning of 200m freestyle heats in Adelaide, with Zac Incerti’s disqualification and Matt Temple’s late scratching opening the way for the Victorian to line up in Sunday night’s final.

Horton missed an individual spot in the 400m on Saturday night and won’t get the chance to defend his Olympic gold in that event. So fast was the final that Horton’s swim was the third quickest in the world this year but not enough to get past his Dolphins teammates Elijah Winnington and Jack McLoughlin.

All of his hopes were resting on a spot in the 4x200m relay, which he anchored to gold at the 2019 World Championships. In theory, he needs to finish top six in that event, although every swimmer in the final is technically available for relay selection. With heats in the mornings, we’ve got a beauty of a night session with plenty of fascinating storylines to follow.

Horton fails to qualify for Tokyo OlympicsMack Horton is the reigning Olympic gold medallist in the men's 400m freestyle. He won't be swimming in the event in Tokyo. 🤯😧 9WWOS Swimming trials are dumb DylanNoronha Unless he qualifies in other events and Jack McLoughlin does a Craig Stevens Competition too hot. Mack swam the 400 faster at these trials than Rio trials. Winnington has a huge motor, and McLoughlin qualifies for his 2nd Olympics. Mack might still qualify for the 200m relay.

Mack Horton misses out on Olympic selection in gold-medal eventAustralian swimming star Mack Horton will not have a chance to defend his 400 metres freestyle gold medal after finishing third in the final at the national team trials. Disappointed for Mack but it sounds extremely positive for a chance at an Aussie medal at the games for the two who did qualify. Congrats and good luck! This is good for Aussies, right? I mean a gold seems certain for those who qualified He didn’t want to stand on the podium anyway, why bother.
