When hearings before the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture resume at either the end of June or the start of July a different method of providing testimony will be implemented in an attempt by the commission to meet its deadline of March 2021

When public hearings before the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture resume at either the end of June or the beginning of July – after restrictions on activities due to the national lockdown against the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus – a different method of providing testimony will be implemented in an attempt by the commission to meet its deadline of March 2021.

He added that he had been in communication with Justice Minister Ronald Lamola with regard to travel restrictions, given that some of the staff, himself included, resided in different provinces and he wanted to make sure that the necessary provisions were put in place for his legal team, investigators and other staff. He added that, while the staff may return to work on June 15, public hearings could only resume at the “end of June or beginning of July”.

“When the court granted us the extension, it was with the understanding that the terms of reference were too wide and a limitation to these terms, in line with what the Public Protector had reflected in her report, would be necessary,” said Zondo. The entire commission team is working hard to finish its work before the deadline given to it by the high courtHe said this should ensure that numerous witness testimonies could be heard during one sitting.
