The independent panel will help ‘understand what happened’ as the WHO staves off criticism, as it had to after the 2014 Ebola crisis

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, at the WHO headquarters in Geneva Switzerland July 3, 2020. Picture: FABRICE COFFRINI/REUTERSThe World Health Organisation , which has faced fierce US criticism over its handling of the coronavirus crisis, launched an independent panel on Thursday to review its response to the pandemic.

At their annual assembly in May, WHO member states agreed to an independent probe into the agency’s coronavirus response, following repeated US attacks. US President Donald Trump has accused the WHO of botching its handling of the pandemic and of being a “puppet of China”. Tedros hit out at divisions in the international community and warned of severe consequences if this is not rectified.

“How is it difficult for humans to unite to fight a common enemy that’s killing people indiscriminately? Tedros said. “Together is the solution, unless we want to give the advantage [to] the enemy, to the virus that has taken the world hostage — and this has to stop.”
