US national security council says Bolton’s manuscript appears to contain 'significant amounts of classified information'

Letter surfaces amid a pitched battle in the Senate over whether to remove Trump from office in part due to conduct described by Bolton in the manuscriptFormer US national security adviser John Bolton. Picture: AFP/BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI

Contradicting Trump’s version of events, Bolton wrote in the unpublished book manuscript that the president told him he wanted to freeze $391m in security aid to Ukraine until Kiev pursued investigations into Democrats, including Biden and the former vice-president’s son Hunter Biden, the New York Times reported.

Democrats want to call Bolton, a Republican foreign policy hawk, and a small number of other officials to testify. Trump’s fellow Republicans in the Senate have resisted the idea of having any witnesses. Democratic senators used their questions to try to undermine the defense presented by Trump’s legal team and make their case for witnesses including Bolton. Republicans used their questions to try to bolster the contention of Trump’s team that he did not commit an impeachable offence even if Bolton’s assertions are true.

Trump lashed out at Bolton on Twitter. He said Bolton “couldn’t get approved for the ambassador to the UN years ago, couldn’t get approved for anything since, ‘begged’ me for a non Senate approved job” and added that “if I listened to him, we would be in World War Six by now.” Responding to a question by top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer, lead House prosecutor Adam Schiff said there would be no way to have a fair trial without witnesses.

NO, it’s more of a threat to Trump’s presidency and impeachment.
