The South African football crowds used to yell “Mlunguuu” every time Dean Furman had the ball. He earned 58 caps for the national team.

Dean Furman is one of the few local players who wore his heart on his sleeve during his playing days. The 35-year-old retired midfielder earned 58 caps with Bafana Bafana and was a fan-favourite. ‘Mlungu’as he’s affectionately known, received his first international call-up for a friendly match against Australia in 2008.

Unknown to many at the time, Dean Furman impressed in his first match which was against Brazil. A few days later, Mlungu earned his first man of the match award in the country’s 2–0 defeat of Mozambique. He played a huge role in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations helping Bafana reach the semi-finals on home soil. Under Shakes Mashaba, he was given the captain’s armband and led the team to the 2015 Afcon game unbeaten.

Having played for Oldham Athletic and Doncaster Rovers, Dean Furman moved to the Premier Soccer League for the first time by joining SuperSport United. The move shocked many given the ex-Bafana captain grew up in England and was used to a certain style of football. Under Stuart Baxter, Furman fitted like a glove and was one of the club’s key players. He won the MTN 8 and Nedbank Cup twice during his four-year stay with Matsatsantsa.

When leaving SuperSport United, Dean Furman together with his wife and newborn baby returned to his parents and his wife’s parents in England.“Stan has been unbelievable. He flew out to the UK to have talks with me and he was so positive. He sold the club so well and so it seemed like the right place to be at this moment in my career.”Dean Furman earned 58 caps and scored four times for Bafana Bafana in the eight years he played for the national team.
